Doris Winifred Reid

December 29, 1916 - May 5, 2008

Doris W. Reid, aged 91 of Ludington, formerly of Free Soil, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2008 at Oakview Medical Care Facility in Ludington. Doris was born on December 29, 1916 in Fern to Charles and Blanche (Helm) Wheeler, and graduated from Custer High School. On July 6, 1935, she married Paul J. Reid in Whitehall, and they celebrated 68 years together before Paul preceded her in death on March 16, 2004. In 1942, Paul and Doris settled on their farm in Meade Township where they raised a son and two daughters. Doris served as Meade Township Clerk and Treasurer. Farm life and her beautiful flower garden brought her great enjoyment and satisfaction. For 40 years prior to moving to Ludington, Doris was an active member of the Free Soil United Methodist Church, where she served on many committees and sang in the choir. She is currently a member of the Ludington United Methodist Church. Doris cherished the opportunity to share Christ’s love by her words of encouragement and helping those in need. She was recognized by the United Methodist Women of the West Michigan Conference as a “Second Century Woman.” She represented Mission Unlimited by serving God in her church and her community. Doris also authored a book titled “Hailstones and Rainbows,” a biography of family history. She was also a member of The Write People, Inc - writers club where many of her short stories were published and enjoyed. In addition to her husband Paul, Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Maxine McIntosh, special nephew Michael McIntosh, and her brothers Darrol, Lee, and Bly Wheeler. She will be lovingly remembered by her family, friends, and her loving caregivers at Oakview Medical Care Facility. Doris is survived by her son Frederick (Margot) Reid of Cascade; her daughters Ellamae (Mike) McDonald of Ludington, and Bonnie (Tom) Bouisseau of Grand Rapids; her 10 grandchildren Michael (Terry) McDonald, Shawn (Marilyn) McDonald, Bryan McDonald and Kevin McDonald all of Ludington, Pam (William) Moran III of Grand Rapids, Patrick (Jody) Reid of Jenison, Blaine (Cathy) Reid of North Carolina, Holly (Tim) Kauffman of Grand Rapids, Jodi (Rob) Coxon of Cedar Springs, and Amy (David) Wozniak of Alto; her 18 great-grandchildren Seth, Chaya, Brooke, Brandon, Brent, Breann, Alyssa, David, Morgan, Ryan, Seumas, Ashley, Christopher, Blake, Jordan, Justin, Jon, and Joe; two great, great-grandsons Brent Jr. and Colby; her brother Charles (Bessie) Wheeler of Ludington; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place at Western Michigan Crematory in Muskegon. A memorial service of sharing and remembrance will be held later this summer upon the completion of her church Ludington United Methodist. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Eden Township.
