Grace Beatrice Cowell

Grace B. (Green) Cowell, aged 92, of Custer was called home by her Lord on Monday, December 14, 2009. Grace was born on November 2, 1917 in Custer, the daughter of Charles R. and Hazel (Shively) Green, where she grew up and graduated from Custer High School with the class of 1936. She lived in Custer until her marriage to Eugene W. Cowell on July 27, 1938, after which they lived in Ludington for 8 years due to Eugene’s employment. She was called back to her home in Custer by the sudden illness and death of her mother, and moved her family back to Custer to continue caring for her father. She lived in the same home where was born until her death. Grace loved her family and her home, and often stated “My home is where my heart is.” She enjoyed writing poetry and loved doing things for others, one of which was baking and decorating cakes and cookies. Her husband Eugene preceded her in death on April 11, 1975. Grace worked as a 2nd cook for Mason County Eastern Schools from 1975 until her retirement in 1988. She was a former member of the Custer Baptist Church having served in many areas of the Lord’s work and in homes of the missionaries and their labors for the Lord. Grace also served as the church custodian. Currently, she was a faithful member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church and its labors for the Lord. She was also preceded in death in death by her parents, an infant daughter Alma Jean, her brother Lowell Green, and her sister Gladys Green Teiber. Grace will be lovingly remembered by her son Eugene H. Cowell and his wife Diane of Bradley and Fountain; her daughter Charlene Cowell Boutwell and her husband Gene of Newaygo; 7 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 8 great, great-grandchildren; her sister Clara Green Drost of Custer; her brother Charles L. Green of Branch; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
