I have so many fond memories of summer’s up at Black Lake with Mel, Imogene, and the kids, and sometimes we were joined by the Parker’s. I picture my mom and Imogene in the kitchen, canning salmon as fast as they could during the salmon derby. I’ll never forget the day Mel and Dad headed out salmon fishing and they had engine trouble. They came back to Scottville, cut down two trees to use as posts, put a board across the top, which they used to haul the old engine out of the boat. They then went to a junkyard and got a used engine, put it back in the boat and were out fishing again by the afternoon. They were too very determined fisherman, and we sure enjoyed the canned salmon, the rest of the year. Mel was such a gentle, soft spoken, kind man. We remember him with great fondness. We weren’t family by blood, but we were family by choice. What joy it will be when we all are reunited in Heaven.
