Bernice O. Sorensen's Obituary
OBITUARY:Bernice O. “Big Gram” Sorensen, aged 94 of Custer passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Tendercare of Ludington. Bernice was born on November 29, 1916 on the family farm in Custer to Orin and Ethel (Lawton) Larr, and married Anker Sorensen on October 12, 1940. Sadly, he preceded her in death on December 27, 1954. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her son Ivan; her son-in-law Ken Bailey; her grandchildren Bobby Stimes, Ronald, and Rhonda Sorensen; her brothers Melford, Virtol, and Ernest Larr; and her sisters Velma Johnson, and Dora Duchenois. Bernice formerly worked at Epworth Heights and retired from Floracraft, enjoying her time playing Bingo at clubs around the area, and taking the occasional trip up to the casino. Her greatest love was for her family. Her nickname “Big Gram” reflects on the size of her heart. Bernice will be lovingly remembered by her children Dolores (Floyd) Timmons of Coloma, Wisconsin, Ronald (Judy) Sorensen of Custer, Janis Bailey of Fountain, Myrtle “Mert” (Mason) Tyndall of Branch, and Kathleen Rosencrans of Custer; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 4 great, great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law Geri Larr of Custer; many nieces and nephews; and her dear friends John Burgess, Jim and Donna Shoup, and Dick Wendt. Funeral services will be held for Bernice at 1:00 pm on Monday, March 7 at the Stephens Funeral Home in Scottville, with Rev. Joe Hilyard, Hospice of Michigan Chaplain officiating. Burial will take place at Brookside Cemetery in the spring. Friends may meet with her family for a time of visitation on Sunday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Those who wish to make a memorial contribution are asked to consider making them to her family.
