Floyd P. Obel's Obituary
Floyd P. Obel aged 88 of Ludington passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Tendercare of Ludington. Floyd was born on November 22, 1928 in Manistee and was the son of Marius and Catherine (Nelson) Obel. On September 11, 1948 he married Doris R. Ferris in a ceremony officiated by Rev. John Christensen and celebrated 66 years together before Doris preceded him in death on October 4, 2014.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Floyd operated the Obel Furniture Store, located in Ludington’s Fourth Ward, for many years before closing the store in 1978 and working for Brill Manufacturing until his retirement in 1993. Floyd enjoyed flying very much and was proud to still carry his pilot’s license even though he gave up the captain’s seat years ago. In their later years, he and Doris looked forward to Senior’s Day every Wednesday at the casino, visiting with friends and even winning a jackpot or two.
Floyd will be greatly missed by his children Edward Obel and wife Dee of San Antonio, TX, Kathy Reed and husband Clair of Oakdale, TN, and Diana Potter and husband Curt of Ludington, his 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, his sisters-in-law Nancy (Bob) Coats of Brethren, and LeAnn Adams of Florida, and his brother-in-law Ronald (Dorothy) Ferris of Grand Rapids.
A Celebration of Life service will be held for both Floyd and Doris later this summer. Floyd will be interred next to his beloved Doris at Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington. Those who wish to remember Floyd with a memorial donation are asked to consider Harbor Hospice.
