Leona Fern McCumber's Obituary
Mrs. Leona McCumber, aged 83, of Custer, passed away Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Tendercare of Ludington. Leona was born on April 8, 1925 in Scottville, the daughter of Harry and Effie (Hopkins) Kline. On February 20, 1943, she married Robert N.B. McCumber in Flint, and they celebrated 61 years together before Robert preceded her in death on June 11, 2004. Leona was also preceded in death by her parents, her grandsons James Porter Jr., and Duane “Dude” McCumber, her son-in-law Donald Arnouts, her sister Rosie Skow, and her brother Bill Kline. Leona began working at Riedl’s making sewing machine parts, at the Star Lake Bar, and for Pillsbury Company in Ludington making pastries and pies. She most recently worked at Stokely’s Cannery in Scottville as a Crew Leader for several years until her retirement. Leona was a very active woman enjoying many outdoor activities like snowmobiling, mushroom hunting, and fishing with her family. She liked to play bingo and setback with friends, and looked forward to trips to Manistee with her husband Robert to enjoy a little gaming at the casino. In her quiet time, you could always find her with a pen in hand enjoying a good crossword puzzle, or watching Wheel of Fortune and soaps. Her greatest love was to be at home caring for her beloved husband and family. Leona will be greatly missed by her children Richard & Sue McCumber of Custer, Duane “Doc” & Jean “Skip” McCumber of Fountain, Patricia Arnouts of Custer, Jean Feister and her friend Perry Tyndall of Branch, and Stanley & Sharon McCumber of Branch; 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, her first soon-to-be great, great-grandson, her sister Florabelle Dykstra of Muskegon, and many nieces and nephews & cousins.
