To Diane and family,
I was very saddened this afternoon to learn of Mike's passing and I hope all of you will find some peace and comfort in remembering the many years and times that you all were able to share with him. He seemed very proud of all of you when showing me some photographs he had, and pointing out "who was who" to me.
I had not spoken with him since his mother's funeral awhile back, but I think about and remember all of my Harper Woods friends from long ago almost daily. I lived just two doors down from the Grajewskis and love the memories of the backyard football and plastic baseball games we enjoyed so much, especially when we were able to get together a large group to play. As Mike grew older, we saw less and less of each other, especially with me being 4 years his junior. He went away to pursue different interests (and the military) and gave me three things: a 20 gallon aquarium, an electric football set with tiny blue and silver metal men, and a great set of small plastic army men. The aquarium leaked terribly after giving me years of service and had to be tossed, and the electric game ceased to function, although I still have the tiny men in a box in my cabinet. (I think they originally belonged to his older brother Larry). The thing which I believe Mike would have enjoyed hearing, is that I kept the entire army men set in excellent condition and today one of my own grandson's loves playing with it whenever he visits. He calls the set "Grandpa's special toys"! They are very special, and I have kept them safely for over 45 years. Seeing my grandson playing on the floor with the set recalls for me those wonderful days about a time that I hold dearly. Mike was a big part of that world for me. I truly hope that what I write here will bring you all a smile and some comfort.
Take care and God bless,
Ralph DeCew, from Woodland
